However, brushing and flossing aren’t the only way we can prevent tooth decay. The foods we eat can have a significant effect on the health of our teeth.
When we eat sugary foods and drinks, then acid is produced in our mouth to break it down. This acid will dissolve the tooth surface and begin the first stage of tooth decay. Some sugars are natural in food and drink, such as honey, milk, and fruits. Although these sugars are natural, they can still be a cause for tooth decay.
Cavities are most common for those who are between the ages of six to nineteen years old. When cavities form, they can cause pain, problems chewing, and even tooth abscesses. Also, if plaque isn’t brushed or flossed away regularly, then it can become tartar. If tartar is near the gums, then it can lead to gingivitis, which is an early form of gum disease.

While these are known as a salty, savory snack, they are still a hazard for our teeth. These are full of starches that will turn into sugar. Since we rarely have only one potato chip, the acid produced to break down the starch will linger in our mouths for a while. A good thing to do after eating a bag of potato chips is to floss and remove any pieces that may be stuck.
Not all alcohol is sweet; some can be bitter or have little to no sugar. However, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t just as bad for your teeth. Alcohol will dry your mouth out, and saliva is an essential part of keeping teeth healthy. It prevents food particles from sticking to your teeth and washes away food particles. Saliva will also help you repair the early signs of tooth decay, gum disease, along with other oral infections.
You can keep your mouth hydrated by drinking enough water, and by using fluoride rinses and oral hydration solutions.
