How Long Do Dentures Last? (And How to Make Them Last Longer)
Denture lifespan varies significantly by type, materials, and how well they are maintained. Understanding how long your dentures should last — and what you can do to extend that lifespan — helps you protect your investment and plan for the future. Texas Gentle Dental serves Katy TX, Spring TX, Cinco Ranch, and surrounding areas. See our complete Katy TX denture guide.

Average Denture Lifespan by Type
- Full (complete) dentures: 5–10 years with proper care. Gum tissue changes over time cause the fit to degrade even if the denture itself is in good condition. Relining every 3–5 years extends usable life.
- Partial dentures — acrylic: 3–5 years. More susceptible to wear and breakage.
- Partial dentures — cast metal: 10–15 years. The most durable removable partial option.
- Immediate (same-day) dentures: Typically 6–12 months before being replaced with a conventional denture after gums fully heal.
- Implant-supported (snap-in) dentures: The prosthesis: 10–15 years. The implants: 20+ years or lifetime.
- Hybrid / All-on-4 dentures: Acrylic prosthesis: 10–15 years. Zirconia prosthesis: 15–25 years. Implants: lifetime.
Signs Your Dentures Need to Be Replaced or Relined
- Loose fit or slipping during eating and speaking
- Sore spots or irritation that don’t resolve after adjustments
- Visible cracks, chips, or broken teeth
- Difficulty chewing foods you used to eat easily
- Noticeable color changes or staining that won’t clean off
More than 5–7 years have passed since fabrication
How to Make Your Dentures Last Longer
- Clean daily: Brush with a soft denture brush and non-abrasive cleaner. Never use regular toothpaste — it scratches the surface and creates places for bacteria to grow.
- Soak overnight: Dentures need to stay moist. Soak in water or a denture solution overnight to prevent warping.
- Handle carefully: Always remove dentures over a folded towel or a sink of water. Drops cause cracks.
- Avoid hot water: Hot water warps acrylic. Always use cool or lukewarm water.
- Skip harsh chemicals: No bleach, no abrasive cleaners. Both damage denture materials.
- See your dentist regularly: Annual checkups catch fit issues early. A reline at the right time can add years to your denture’s life.
- Don’t sleep in them: Rest periods help your gum tissue recover. Sleeping in dentures accelerates bone loss and gum irritation.

Relining vs Replacing Your Dentures
Reline if: the denture is less than 5–7 years old, structurally sound, and just needs the interior resurfaced to match your current gum shape. Chairside reline: same-day. Lab reline: 1–2 days.
Replace if: the denture is over 7–10 years old, heavily worn or repaired multiple times, or no longer fits well even after relining.
