Kids Dentist Magnolia TX for All Ages

At each stage of their life, your children need something different in order to maintain the best dental health possible. Fortunately, our dental services can cover your children up until they reach adulthood, and beyond. Even before their first dental visit, we are totally invested in your child’s oral health. That’s because their behaviors and habits, from a very young age, have a way of majorly affecting the condition of their teeth and gums. We’ll help you take care of your child’s oral health because that means that you’ll also be helping us.

Infancy

Start paying attention to your child’s health from the moment they are born. The health of your baby’s gums can indicate the condition of their teeth. Furthermore, babies are very susceptible to gum disease. This phenomenon, known as “baby bottle rot,” typically occurs when parents allow milk to sit on the back of their baby’s gums. The most likely reason for this is that the baby fell asleep while still sipping from the baby bottle. To avoid gum rot, remove the bottle as soon as you notice your baby falling asleep. You can also gently wipe the gums with a soft, damp cloth to wipe away bacteria.

Additionally, properly weaning your baby from the bottle will prevent issues with misalignment and crowded teeth. Try to pay attention to whether your baby sucks his or her thumbs or fingers. If you find that to be the case, try to put a stop to it immediately. Behaviors such as thumb-sucking, lip-sucking, and similar consistent mouth movements will affect how your child’s teeth grow in. You can find more information about how to best care for your baby’s oral health through the American Pediatric Association.

Baby Teeth

As soon as your child’s first set of teeth begin to show, it’s time to start brushing. You should only use a soft-bristle brush that is designated for children. In fact, a soft bristle brush is generally the only type of brush you should use, even for adult teeth. Gently brush and floss your child’s teeth until they are able to hold the toothbrush themselves. When that time comes, allow them to do it. Of course, you must supervise them to make sure that they get it right. Children should ideally brush after every meal, to get the sugars off of their teeth and gums. At the very least, he or she should brush twice per day.

You can also start to bring your child to the dentist for regular dental cleanings at this point in time. We recommend professional cleaning every six months. Our hygienist will make sure that your kid’s teeth are clean and healthy. Actually, you can bring your entire family in for professional dental cleanings! This is a great way to stay on top of everyone’s oral health and catch any problems before they become bigger problems.

Permanent Teeth

As soon as your child’s permanent back molars erupt, we recommend that you come back to Gentle Dental Care for sealants. Sealants last up to ten years, which is why we don’t typically recommend them for your child’s first set of teeth. Considering that adult molars can take as long as 11 years of age before they develop, sealants can potentially last your child into adulthood. This means that or she may go their entire life without ever developing a cavity!

You also have the option to get braces for your child, if you so choose. Braces aren’t always necessary, in cases of minor misalignment. However, if your child’s teeth are very crooked or crowded, we recommend braces. Straight teeth are much easier to clean and maintain, and therefore it’s easier to prevent decay and other dental issues. Even bad breath is reduced when you have straight teeth because it’s easier to remove odor-causing bacteria at home. Other issues that require braces are if your child currently has trouble speaking or eating. If your child’s teeth cause them injury or discomfort, braces will be very worth it. Our orthodontists can speak with you about your various options and the different price points of children’s braces, and help you make a decision.

Wisdom Teeth

When your child gets a bit older, they’ll likely need to have their wisdom teeth removed. Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars to grow in. Because of this, they usually grow in sideways, which is otherwise known as impacted. Because this can cause damage and misalignment to the jaw or your child’s other teeth, we usually want to remove these wisdom teeth. Our dental staff will take x-rays and determine if your child’s wisdom teeth pose a risk to their other teeth. If that is the case, we can extract them.
