What is an Orthodontist?
You may be familiar with what an orthodontist does. On the other hand, you may think orthodontist is another word for “dentist.” While orthodontists and dentists perform some of the same dental procedures, orthodontists specifically focus on issues with teeth alignment. If you or your family members have dental issues such as overbites or underbites, crooked teeth, or overcrowding, you can benefit from seeking the help of an orthodontist. An orthodontist also supplies and installs braces. At Gentle Dental Care, our orthodontic services also include TMJ therapy, which we will explain in more detail below.
Many people assume that certain dental characteristics are passed on genetically. That is true, in a sense. However, many dental issues are passed from parent to child or present in all siblings due to certain birthing and raising habits. For example, overcrowding teeth are likely to appear in children whose families have habits of pulling out temporary teeth as opposed to letting them fall out of their own. Other behaviors that can influence your children’s tooth appearance or dental health include:
- Allowing your children to sleep with bottles in their mouths (causes premature tooth decay)
- Children not being weaned from bottles on proper schedule (can cause overcrowding)
- Children sucking thumbs (pushes teeth forward or to one side)
Thanks to this behavioral component, dental issues can be prevented in future generations. Furthermore, most of these issues are completely correctable by a dentist. Visit our orthodontists at Gentle Dental Care and we’ll straighten your children’s smile.
Family Orthodontist 77379 Services
Orthodontists offer a few special services that general dentistry might not provide. At Gentle Dental Care, we offer the below services and more for all of your family members.
One of the most common services that orthodontics perform is installing and maintaining braces. At Gentle Dental Care, we have three different braces options. The traditional metallic braces are the kind of braces you typically see on television or in cartoons. Your child or teen might like the classic look. However, if they prefer a more subtle type of braces, we have a ceramic version. While the ceramic braces are similar to the traditional style in size and overall appearance, the brackets are either clear or tooth-colored. Lastly, we offer Invisalign “invisible braces.” Invisalign is actually a clear aligner created by digital scanning and 3D printing to perfectly fit your child’s teeth.
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint and refers to the joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull. If you experience pain when chewing or opening and closing your mouth, you may have a TMJ issue. You may notice jaw pain, headaches, ear pain, or your jaw may occasionally become stuck or might pop. Also, if you grind your teeth, you may develop an issue with your temporomandibular joint.
While these issues can signify other health issues, let our orthodontists give you their opinion. If you have a temporomandibular disorder (TMD), we can provide relief. We employ a variety of short-term as well as more permanent solutions, depending on the severity and recurrence of your symptoms. In many cases, behavioral change is all that is required. However, we also offer oral surgery is needed.
To prevent TMD, you may benefit from a nightguard. We mold our night guards to fit the individual. If you grind your teeth, a nightguard can prevent enamel from wearing down. Also, night guards minimize gum irritation and jaw pain. If you aren’t sure if you grind your teeth in your sleep, pay attention to how you feel in the morning. If your jaw hurts when you wake up, come to Gentle Dental and we’ll evaluate your oral health. Depending on how long you’ve been grinding your teeth, we may be able to tell if you’ve developed this habit.
Other Gentle Dental Care Services
TMD isn’t the only reason you or a loved one may need oral surgery. If someone has other jaw issues, as a result of impacted teeth or behavioral habits such as tooth grinding, we may need to perform surgery. You should have your oral surgery performed by the surgeons at Gentle Dental Care. We use the patient’s own plate-rich-plasma. By using your own plasma, we greatly lower the chance or injection and speed the healing process. Your body initially responds to most foreign substances as if it just encountered an enemy. You avoid that by using plasma from your body. If you need a bone graft or implant, we can help.
