Dental Bridges

Fixed dental bridges to replace missing teeth, made to match your smile. Montgomery, Magnolia and Houston-area offices.

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by joining a false tooth to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. It's fixed in place, so you don't take it out, and it's made in a dental lab to match your other teeth. Patients in Montgomery can get a dental bridge at our Montgomery office on TX-105, and bridges are also offered at our Magnolia, Copperfield Houston and Cinco Ranch offices. Bridges are part of our general dentistry services.

A missing tooth affects more than your smile. Over time, the teeth next to the gap can drift or tilt into the space, and the tooth above or below it can shift too. That can change your bite and make chewing and speaking harder. A bridge fills the gap and keeps your other teeth in place.

A traditional bridge has three parts:

  • Two crowns that fit over the teeth on either side of the gap (called abutments)
  • A false tooth (called a pontic) that sits in the gap
  • One solid piece: the crowns and false tooth are made together, so the bridge is strong and stable

Bridge, Implant or Partial Denture?

  • Dental bridge: fixed in place and usually finished in two visits. The teeth on either side are shaped to hold the bridge, so it works best when those teeth would benefit from crowns anyway.
  • Dental implant: replaces the tooth root as well as the tooth, and doesn't involve the neighboring teeth. It takes longer because the implant needs time to heal.
  • Partial denture: a removable option that can replace several teeth at once, usually at a lower cost.

We'll look at your teeth, gums and bone and explain which option fits your mouth, your timeline and your budget.

What to Expect

  1. Exam and planning: we check the gap and the teeth on either side, take X-rays and talk through your options.
  2. Preparing the teeth: the teeth on either side of the gap are reshaped so the crowns can fit over them, and we take impressions for the dental lab.
  3. Temporary bridge: you'll wear a temporary bridge to protect the prepared teeth while the lab makes your permanent one.
  4. Fitting your bridge: at your second visit, we check the fit, bite and color, then cement the bridge in place.

Your new bridge may feel a little different for a few days. Stick to softer foods at first, then return to your normal diet once it feels comfortable.

Materials

Bridges can be made from porcelain, metal or a combination of both. Porcelain is tooth-colored and blends in with your smile. Metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal bridges add strength for back teeth that take more chewing force. We'll recommend the material that suits where your bridge will go.

Caring for Your Bridge

Brush twice a day and clean under the false tooth every day with a floss threader, a water flosser or small interdental brushes, since food can collect there. Keep up with regular cleanings so we can check the bridge and the teeth that support it. With good care, a bridge can last for many years.

Cost, Insurance and Payment Options

The cost of a bridge depends on how many teeth it replaces and the material used, so we'll give you a clear estimate after your exam. Many dental plans cover part of the cost of a bridge. We work with most insurance providers and will check your benefits for you. We accept CareCredit and offer payment plans. See our financing page and insurance information.

Frequently Asked Questions — Dental Bridges

How long does it take to get a bridge?

Usually two visits: one to prepare the teeth and take impressions, and one to fit the permanent bridge once the lab has made it. You'll wear a temporary bridge in between.

Does getting a bridge hurt?

We numb the area before preparing the teeth, so most patients are comfortable. Some people notice mild sensitivity for a few days afterward.

Is a temporary bridge the same as a permanent one?

No. A temporary bridge protects your prepared teeth for a short time while the lab makes your permanent bridge. It's not as strong, so avoid hard and sticky foods until your permanent bridge is in.

Can a bridge replace more than one tooth?

Yes. A bridge can replace one tooth or several teeth in a row, as long as the teeth supporting it are strong enough. If several teeth are missing, an implant-supported option or a partial denture may be better.

Does insurance cover dental bridges?

Many dental plans cover part of the cost. We'll check your benefits and explain what you'll owe before treatment begins.

I was impressed by how clean and modern the clinic looked. The equipment seemed up to date, and everything was explained before it was used. My visit was comfortable from start to finish, and the staff made me feel welcome.

Always been helpful, honest, and upfront with me about every service. Started with their Invisalign braces, then had a tooth removed, a bone graft, and now awaiting a new tooth to be put in. They’ve always explained everything and are usually very prompt after arriving. I’m really happy with the work so far as well.
