What is a Dental Emergency?

Dental Emergency

You may have wondered about this yourself. When we think of a medical emergency, we will think of a hospital, specifically the emergency room. You may not know what constitutes a dental emergency. Let’s talk about some of the possibilities.

Dental emergencies are most likely not life-threatening, but they can be serious issues that need immediate care. Ask yourself if you are;

  • Bleeding from the mouth
  • In severe pain (in your mouth)
  • Have any loose teeth
  • Hit in the mouth
  • Swelling in the mouth or face
  • Swelling or bulging in your gums

If you answered yes to one or multiple of these, don’t panic. Let’s talk about what you can do while you are waiting to see your dentist and how they can help.

Potential Emergencies

If you have a dental emergency, it can’t wait

Maybe we should be more specific about what a dental emergency can be. If you are dealing with a tooth infection, are bleeding from the mouth, have lost or chipped a tooth, or have severe swelling and pain in your gums, you need to see us. Losing a tooth can cause law issues for you further down the line, and tooth infections can lead to very serious consequences. If you are in pain and don’t know why, our dentists will help you understand what is going on and resolve the issue. You shouldn’t have to suffer. It is not normal for your mouth to be in great pain.

What Can I Do?

There are some things you can do for yourself as you wait to see your dentist. In the case of heat sensitivity or swelling, holding ice in your mouth can help relieve some of the pain. You can also apply ice to the outside of your mouth in a bag or something similar. If your tooth has come out, you may want to bring it with you. If you are bleeding, hold some cotton or a washcloth in your mouth to stop the blood flow.

Do not cause yourself unnecessary stress by biting down or eating. Wait until you have had your problem resolved so that you don’t damage yourself more.
